About Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology

A public institution in Kenya is named Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Institution of Science and Technology (JOOUST). It bears the name of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, father of politician Raila Odinga of the twenty-first century and Kenya’s first vice president.

Since 2013, Prof. Stephen G. Agong, Ph.D., FAAS, has served as the vice chancellor of JOOUST.

It is situated near Bondo, a town in Siaya County, in western Kenya, some 62 kilometers (39 miles) by road west of Kisumu. The main campus of the institution is located at 0°05’38.0″S and 34°15’31.0″ E (Latitude:-0.093889 and Longitude:34.258611).

JOOUST was established in 2009 as Bondo University institution, a constituent institution of Maseno University, by legal decree. The statute was overturned in 2013, and the university now has its charter as a stand-alone institution of higher learning.

JOOUST is recognized as a science and technology institution by the Ministry of Education (MOE). This distinction is based on the university’s strategic goals, organizational setup, and physical assets. The university has determined its niche based on the prospective areas for growth. These include engineering, renewable energy, freshwater sciences, food and nutrition security, and agriculture.

To handle specialized fields like agricultural and food sciences, engineering and technology, spatial planning and natural resource development, health sciences, and others, the university has established pertinent Schools. The University is leading the growth of its specialty in food security through these academic institutions.

The University established the Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) for Sustainable Use of Insects as Food and Feeds (INSEFOODS) to expand its research and training capabilities. This center is one of the twenty-four (24) East and Central Africa Regional Centers that the World Bank is now funding to develop the region’s expertise in a variety of fields. The overarching goal of INSEFOODS is to use insects as food and animal feed to address issues with sustainable food security. This is accomplished through education, the building of infrastructure, conducting research, and providing extension services to nearby communities. The Center also seeks to create enduring local, regional, and global relationships and networks for study in the pertinent field of food security. 

The School’s and INSEFOODS’ programs often focus on the African Union Agenda 2063, the Social and Economic Pillars of the Kenyan Vision 2030, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The Directorate of Lacustrine and Blue Ocean Economy Studies and the Pii Global Institute have also been formed by the university. The University intends to use its advantageous location in the Lake Victoria Basin to conduct research, innovate, create training, and implement outreach initiatives. The University’s research initiatives and business pursuits will be more closely aligned with the lacustrine economy’s resources in Lake Victoria.
