About Cape Peninsula University of Technology
The Cape Peninsula University of Technology is a university in Cape Town, South Africa (Afrikaans: Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit van Tegnologie). With more than 32,000 students, it is the biggest institution in the Western Cape province and the sole technological university there. The Cape Technikon, Peninsula Technikon, and a few other independent colleges were combined to create it.
After several years of transformation in the South African higher education environment, it was established in January 2005 through the amalgamation of the Cape Technikon and Peninsula Technikon.
The Technikons Act, which was enacted in 1993, gave technikons the authority to provide bachelor’s (B.Tech), master’s, and doctoral degrees in technology. Kader Asmal, who was the education minister at the time, unveiled the National Plan for Higher Education in March 2001. In May 2002, he proposed a potential merger of the two schools, with the University of the Western Cape being recommended for inclusion by the national working group. The final merger was announced before the end of 2002, and the new name was approved in October 2003. Near the end of 2004, Executive Interim Management was chosen.
In February 2006, Prof. L Vuyisa Mazwi-Tanga was chosen to serve as CPUT’s first vice-chancellor. The nine original faculties of the schools were consolidated and reorganized into six at this time: applied science, business, education and social sciences, engineering, health and wellness sciences, and informatics & design.
The e-Innovation Academy, which became the Faculty of Informatics & Design Research Unit as of March 2008, is a separate postgraduate institution that offers transdisciplinary postgraduate programs and supported research. In September 2008, the Department of Information Technology launched the Athlone Living lab, a neighborhood ICT innovation project, in partnership with the Bridgetown Community, Athlone, COFISA, and IDM. On the Western Cape, this would be the first Living Lab.
In April 2008, Trevor Manuel was named the university’s chancellor.
International students (those from outside the SADC) must pay twice as much in tuition as domestic ones. Nowadays, there are little over 2000 foreign students registered. For students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees, the university provides bursaries.
