Ignatius Ajuru University of Education

Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, or IAUE, is a university in Nigeria that was formerly known as Rivers State College of Education from June 1971 until October 2009.

About Ignatius Ajuru University of Education

Rivers State College of Education, which existed from June 1971 until October 2009, was the previous name of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE). As a self-governing institution, Rivers State College of Education was founded. The College was now fully mature and in a position to contribute to society more dynamically. The Governing Council, which is in charge of the college’s general and overall administrative and financial oversight, was created with the sole intention of creating a college. Following the transformation, Mr. E. Aguma, who had been named Principal in January 1975, became the College’s first Provost, and in June 1975, Dr. E.T. Green succeeded Mr. Alagoa as Chairman of the Council.

Following the country’s change of government in July 1975, an interim period was created. In November of that same year, a new Governing Council with Dr. F.A. Eke as Chairman and Mr. R.I.C. Koko as Provost was appointed.

Mr. E. Aguma served as the college’s first provost in 1975, following the institution’s conferral of autonomy following a series of changes made at the time. In January 1977, the institution relocated to Rumuolumeni, where it now has a permanent location, despite the campus still lacking certain basic amenities. This risky move was unquestionably a turning point in the institution’s history because its physical presence on the ground has given it a better opportunity to formulate plans for its continuous expansion and enhancement of existing facilities.

The Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) program, which consisted of four sets of students who passed their diploma exams between 1974 and 1977, was completed by 462 students on March 11, 1978, the day of the college’s official opening and first graduation ceremony. The College joyfully matriculated the first-degree program participants on May 28, 1982.

A total of 3,169 students have completed the College’s various programs by the end of the academic year 1983/1984. 2,504 of the total number of students completed the NCE program, 531 completed the ACE program, and 134 completed the B. Ed. program. It is important to remember that Rivers State College of Education was the only college connected with the University of Ibadan that offered the Bachelor of Education degree program.

To enhance the number of teachers in the State, the Rivers State Government chose to fund the program in 1980, when the Government announced its desire to launch degree programs in educational subjects through Colleges of Education. Prof. G.O.M. Tasie was appointed provost of the college and charged with turning it into a school that grants degrees. After his appointment, Rivers State College of Education began admitting applicants for degree programs in the 1981–1982 academic year. It should be noted that Rivers State College of Education was the only college of education associated with the University of Ibadan to provide the Bachelor of Education degree program.

To further provide chances for high-quality education for Nigerians, particularly those who are native to the State, the Rivers State Government chose to transform Rivers State College of Education into a university in 2009. Given that the college had long been giving degrees in association with the University of Ibadan, the school should have no trouble making the switch from a college of education to a university. However, many alumni of the now-defunct Rivers State College of Education yearned to advance their academic credentials by earning university degrees, especially in the setting to which they had grown used.

The Rivers State Government’s University of Education Law No. 8 of 2009, which was approved by the Rivers State House of Assembly on October 15, 2009, and His Excellency, Chief Rotimi Amaechi, the state’s then Executive Governor, on October 20, 2009, established Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. IAUE became the second university owned by the state. Prof. Okey Onuchukwu is the vice chancellor of IAUE at the moment.
