Lupane State University

The Zimbabwean government passed a statute establishing Lupane State University in 2004, and in August 2005, the College of Agricultural Sciences welcomed 14 pioneer students.

History of Lupane State University

The government’s initial independence-era policies included an increase in higher education.

The Zimbabwean government launched a significant effort in 1980 to increase access to both primary and secondary education for those who had previously been underserved. The main goal of this endeavor was to remedy historical inequities in the human resource base caused by the discriminatory educational system that was in place before independence.

Primary school enrollment increased from 819 000 in 1979 to 2.2 million by 1988, while high school enrollment increased from 66 000 to 653 353 during the same period. This development made it necessary for the Ministry of Higher and tertiary education to increase access to tertiary institutions to take on more secondary school graduates in light of the surge in enrollment at Zimbabwe’s only university at the time.

Therefore, it is not surprising that the Zimbabwean government has facilitated the establishment of seven state universities over about fifteen years, and three more are planned to complete the cycle of provincial universities.
