About Nelson Mandela University
The University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), the Port Elizabeth Technikon, and the Port Elizabeth campus of Vista University were all previously known as Nelson Mandela University (formerly known as Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU)). The seaside city of Gqeberha serves as the principal administrative hub for this South African university. Yet, the Port Elizabeth Art School was established in 1882, long before Nelson Mandela University was created in January 2005 as a result of the amalgamation of three different institutions.
Providing academic, professional, and vocational training is Nelson Mandela University. There are seven campuses for the institution, six of which are in Gqeberha and one in George. The university’s South Campus is its major location. At Nelson Mandela University, students can pursue certificate or degree programs that lead to doctoral degrees. Kader Asmal, the then-minister of education, first disclosed the plans for the NMMU in 2002. The proposal was a component of a bigger strategy to reform South Africa’s higher education system. The absorption of Vista PE by UPE on January 2, 2004, and the merging of PE Technikon and UPE on January 1, 2005, marked the beginning of the merger process.
The Port Elizabeth Technikon and the University of Port Elizabeth merged to establish NMMU in 2005.
Before the merger, UPE had taken over management of Vista University’s Port Elizabeth Campus in 2004. George, where PE Technikon has a satellite campus, was also combined. Chief Justice Pius Langa served as the university’s first chancellor, and Justice Ronnie Pillay served as the body’s first chair. The university’s first vice chancellor and chief executive officer, Rolf Stumpf, was replaced on January 1, 2008, by Professor Derrick Swartz. After being appointed in 2017, Professor Sibongile Muthwa is the present vice-chancellor. On July 20, 2017, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s name was formally changed to Nelson Mandela University.
