About Technical University of Kenya
Nairobi, Kenya is home to the Technical University of Kenya (TU-K). Former president Mwai Kibaki formally chartered it in January 2013.
Out of the Kenya Polytechnic, the Technical University of Kenya was born. Kenya Polytechnic was established in 1961. The Willoughby Report, which was issued in 1949, made recommendations for the creation of a technical institute in Nairobi. The Royal Technical College of East Africa (RTCEA) was established as a result of this.
Establishing a technical college in Nairobi with instruction and training at the technician and semi-professional levels for the three East African nations of Tanganyika, Uganda, and Kenya was the goal. The presence of students who were qualified to join RTCEA in each of the areas was therefore crucial.
While Tanganyika and Uganda created technical institutes in Kampala and Dar es Salaam to prepare applicants for RTCEA, Kenya chose to introduce class streams under the name Kenya Technical Institute (KTI) at RTCEA.
The decision to broaden the Royal Technical College of East Africa’s mission to include degree-granting programs was made in 1960. As a result, the RTCEA was given the authority to provide degrees from the University of London through a special arrangement in 1960. The college’s name was changed to the Royal College of Nairobi as a result of its new status.
Due to capacity constraints, it was no longer practicable for the college to continue hosting Kenya Technical Institute students as its mandate grew. The Kenya Technical Institute had to be relocated as a result of its location. Simultaneously, it was discussed moving the diploma programs from RTCEA to Kenya Technical Institute. As a result, the Kenya Technical Institute was transformed into the Kenya Polytechnic by the government to provide training up to the diploma level as well.
The Kenya Polytechnic was founded to prepare the nation’s middle-class workforce. It is situated on Haile Selassie Avenue close to the City Square Post Office in Nairobi’s core business center, across from the Times Tower. Along with degree programs, it also provides TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) programs. TU-K offers a variety of programs, including DipTech, BTech, BPhil, BEng, and BSc.
The University of Nairobi Senate authorized the first group of the university college’s study programs in July 2009. The Bachelor of Engineering (B. Eng.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology, and the Diploma in Technology (Dip. Tech.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering are the three programs that make up the electrical and electronic engineering curricula.
The B.Eng., B.Tech., and Dip. Tech programs are planned to take five, four, and three years of study, respectively. A portion of the first cohort of degree-seeking students who enrolled in the institution in January 2009 and who have since met the requirements of the Board of Examiners has been approved for degree conferral in the convocation of 2011.
