About United States International University Africa

The largest economy in the East African Community and home to United States International University Africa, often known as USIU Africa, is Kenya. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in the United States and the Commission for Higher Education (CUE) in Kenya both accredit the university.

The university’s main campus is situated in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and biggest city, in the Roysambu neighborhood of the Kasarani neighborhood. This site may be reached by road from Nairobi’s central business district around 12 kilometers (7 mi). Campus location: 01°13’05.0″S, 36°52’45.0″E (Latitude: -1.218056; Longitude: 36.879167).

The university was founded in 1969 as the Nairobi Campus of the San Diego-based United States International University (USIU). The Nairobi Campus of the United States International University became a distinct institution of higher learning in 1999 and adopted the name, USIU Africa. To become Alliant International University, USIU, and the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) combined in 2001.

At USIU Africa, there are students enrolled in 24 undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate programs from over 130 different countries. There are more than 140,000 alumni of the university. The California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) and USIU amalgamated to establish Alliant International University in 2001. By becoming an independent university in 2005 and getting its accreditation as United States International University from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) in 2008, USIU-Africa was able to successfully distance itself from the new organization.

The School of Business Administration moved into its new home in 2004, and after billionaire Manu Chandaria endowed the school with US$1 million, it was renamed the Chandaria School of Business. The landmark, ultra-modern Library and Information Center, which cost KES 550 million to build and covered 10,000 square meters, was finished three years later with assistance from the US Agency for International Development (USAID)’s ASHA program. To accommodate the new School of Science and Technology, the former library building underwent renovation in 2009. It was given the name Lillian K. Beam Building in honor of the inspirational former Executive Director.

The university changed its name in 2014, going back to being known as United States International University-Africa. The new building for the School of Science and Technology and the new School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences was finished a year later. The Science Center was inaugurated in March 2015 by H.E. William S. Ruto, the deputy president of Kenya.

The Board of Trustees announced in December 2014 that longtime Vice Chancellor Prof. Freida Brown will be retiring. On Thursday, April 7, 2016, Prof. Paul T. Zeleza was officially appointed as USIU-Africa’s second Vice Chancellor after a lengthy hunt for her replacement.

The decision was made to start building a new Student Center to consolidate and house student support services as well as provide additional recreational facilities and student government offices to keep up with the student population, which has grown to over 6500 students. On Thursday, November 10, 2016, the Freida Brown Student Center was formally inaugurated at a ceremony officiated by Prof. Freida Brown, a former vice-chancellor, and Mr. Ronald Osumba, the chairman of the board of the Youth Enterprise Development Fund.
