About Adventist University of Central Africa
The Adventist University of Central Africa (AUCA), also known as Universite Adventiste d’Afrique Central in French, is a university affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist faith located close to two campuses in Kigali, Rwanda. The second-largest Christian school system in the world, the Seventh-day Adventist education system, includes it.
The biggest Adventist university in the French-speaking regions of Africa is AUCA. It has roughly 4,000 pupils in 2015. Although the Adventist University of Central Africa was founded in 1978, it didn’t become operational until October 15, 1984. Political upheaval forced the school to close in 1994, but it reopened in Kigali in 1996.
The campus’s original location was Mudende, in the Gisenyi prefecture (a part of the present-day Western Province). Up until the onset of the Rwandan genocide (April 1994 to July 1994), the university expanded steadily. The Mudende campus was robbed by the local populace, the military, militias, and even AUCA employees before they fled during the genocide due to a broad collapse in law and order. After the murdering ceased, the abandoned campus was depopulated of all portable items and turned into “a sort of no man’s land” for a while.
The campus served as a shelter for the initial wave of Zairian refugees from nearby Kibumba (DRC) at the end of 1996. Even though the Zairian refugees went home a few months later, a larger group of refugees overran the university and further looted it of sellable products while destroying fixed infrastructure like restrooms. Looting increased during the conflict in the years 1997 to 1999.
To sell the Rwandan government the Mudende campus, the University began talks in 1999; but, a deal was not reached until 2003. Finally, the former campus was taken over by the Rwandan government as a base for the Rwanda Defense Forces in February 2006. The government of Rwanda was represented by its Ministry of Defense.
In 1996, the University reopened with a small course catalog and modest structures. The 1.7-acre campus was deemed insufficient for a proper institution, thus a search for a larger site was launched. But because of Gishushu’s advantageous location, the school decided to construct a Science and Technology Center there.
On March 8, 2012, the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s general conference president and Rwanda’s prime minister both attended the groundbreaking. The science center was opened on February 11, 2015, by the president of the Seventh-day Adventist Church’s General Conference, after two and a half years of the project. The new building has 24 classrooms that can accommodate between 40 and 60 students apiece, and all of them have fully networked, digitally responsive whiteboards that make it easier to present information and archive lecture notes right away.
The university is aiming to convert all of its instructional materials to digital format. With e-books delivered to students’ PCs, even the library will be digital. includes the latest technology. A 22 ha of land near Kigali International Airport was acquired for a new campus using money raised from the sale of Mudende and religious contributions. On May 12, 2005, the core academic block’s foundation for the new campus was officially broken. In February 2009, work on a 2000-seat multipurpose conference hall was underway.
