About Kigali Independent University

On March 15, 1996, Kigali Independent University (also known as Université Libre de Kigali, or ULK) was established in Rwanda. ULK is a private institution in Kigali. Rwigamba Balinda, who established the university, is still serving as its president as of 2022.

Following the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, Kigali Independent University (ULK) was founded in 1996. The University’s founder and proprietor is Prof. Dr. Rwigamba Balinda. ULK began operating out of the St. Paul buildings.

Following the St. Paul buildings, ULK constructed its first campus at Kacyiru, where the secondary school “Glory Secondary School” is today housed. All administrative and educational functions at the ULK Kigali campus were relocated to a new facility in the Gisozi sector in 2007. The institution decided to use English as its only medium of instruction in 2009.

Law No. 27/2013 of 24 May 2013 managing higher education in Rwanda, Law No. 13/2009 of 13 July 2009 regulating labor in Rwanda, and the Presidential Order No. 51/01 of 13 July 2010 setting quality requirements in higher education institutions all apply to ULK.

ADMISSION AT THE UNDERGRADUATE LEVEL

The applicant must meet the Ministry of Education Admission criteria or Equivalence for Foreigners to be admitted to the first year of an undergraduate program. The following documents must be submitted by the prospective student to register for any degree or Advanced Certificate Course:

  • A notified photocopy of the required certificate;
  • A fully filled-in registration form;
  • Four passport photos;
  • A copy of the identity card;
  • Evidence of registration fee payment.

Within fifteen days after the Registration Period’s end, any late registration application shall be submitted in writing to the Admissions Committee with a justification for the delay. The Department in charge of the program for which registration is requested will offer to advise the Admissions Committee as it decides on the matter.

ADMISSION AT THE POSTGRADUATE LEVEL

A recognized Bachelor’s Degree with Honors or a degree judged comparable is required for admission to a master’s program. Additionally, candidates must show that they are proficient in English.

Only after successful applicants have completed a registration form and submitted it along with proof of payment for the first installment of the appropriate University fees will they be enrolled. To continue attending classes, students must renew their registration at the start of each succeeding year. Studies will be automatically stopped if the registration is not renewed.
