About Africa Nazarene University

The Church of the Nazarene Colleges and Universities around the world is affiliated with Africa Nazarene University, a private Christian-founded university in Kenya. The Commission for University Education and the International Board of Education has fully accredited Africa Nazarene University.

Using the Ole Kasasi road, the main campus is located on 124 acres (50 ha) in the middle of the Masaai savannah, close to the village of Ongata Rongai, next to Nairobi National Park, and roughly 22 kilometers (14 mi) by road south of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and largest city. The main campus of the institution is located at latitude -1.400556 and longitude 36.790000, or 1°24’02.0″S and 36°47’24.0″E.

A private Christian university affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene International, a Wesleyan holiness movement, is Africa Nazarene University. It was created to train both lay and ministry leaders for the church. In the early 1980s, the Church of the Nazarene implemented higher education to solve the problems facing African society. Africa Nazarene University also considered how to raise the next generation in a morally upright and Christian environment. The Church decided on Kenya as the location to start a Nazarene University, which became the first one outside of North America, in compliance with the Kenya University’s Act of 1985 (the law for the formation of private universities in Kenya).

Following a unanimous vote by its members in a General Assembly in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, in July 1993, the church’s board unanimously approved the establishment of a university in Africa. The church persisted in pursuing negotiations with the Commission of University Education, then the Commission of Higher Education, to establish a degree-awarding institution through the university’s founders. Thus, on November 23, 1993, when the commission issued a letter of interim permission for the university to begin building the groundwork for the construction of Africa Nazarene University on behalf of the Kenyan Government, the legal authority to establish the university was granted.

The university’s first vice chancellor, Dr. Martha John, welcomed 62 students from eleven different African nations in August 1994 who were enrolled in undergraduate theology and business administration courses as well as a master’s program in religion. 42 more students enrolled when the institution added the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science program a year later.

Dr. John was succeeded by Professor Leah Marangu in January 1996, and she was appointed Vice Chancellor in February 1997. The institution received the charter (Accreditation Credentials) from the Kenyan government on October 8, 2002, making it the first private university to do so under the new laws and independent of any other local or international university.
