About Al Akhawayn University

Al Akhawayn University, also known as Tasdawit En Wawmaten in Berber, is a coeducational, independent, public university in Ifrane, Morocco, which is 70 kilometers (43 miles) from the imperial city of Fez. It is situated in the Middle Atlas Mountains. English is used as the instruction language.

Al Akhawayn University was founded in large part by Saudi Arabia’s King Fahd thanks to an endowment set up to clean up an oil spill off the coast of Morocco. The oil leak was never cleaned up since the wind carried it away, and the endowment was utilized to find the university instead. On January 16, 1995, the former King Hassan II of Morocco formally inaugurated Al Akhawayn University, which had been formed by royal decree (Dahir) in 1993. Al-akhawayn, which translates to “two brothers,” is the Arabic name for the two different rulers.

Al Akhawayn offers undergraduate and graduate program options in the Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering, and Business Administration with 2,173 full-time students living and studying together on a residential campus in the Middle Atlas town of Ifrane. These programs are all connected by a common core based on the American liberal arts model. The university offers exchange and foreign programs.
