Bayero University Kano is a university located in Kano, Kano State, Nigeria. It originated in 1975 when it was retitled from Bayero University College and advanced from University College to university. It is the first university in Kano State.

Bayero University has progressed from a small college running Advanced Level training programs to one of the valued Nigerian Universities, documented past the shores of the country.

The seed of Bayero University Kano was the Ahmadu Bello College set up in 1960, situated within the School for Arabic Studies (SAS), in the old city of Kano. With the establishment of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1962, it was retitled Abdullahi Bayero College. In 1964 it inspired a temporary site at the old Kano Airport Hotel, admitting its first set of ten undergraduate students for a B.A. degree program at Ahmadu Bello University.

This first set graduated in 1966 but it persisted as a faculty of ABU until 1980. Before then the brief site had involved hostile fire during the civil war and had to move to its perpetual site (present old campus) in the locality of Kabuga and Dukawuya gates on the Kano-Gwarzo road. The next chapter of development happened in 1975, when Abdullahi Bayero College was elevated to the status of a University College with the right to award degrees on behalf of Ahmadu Bello University and was retitled Abdullahi Bayero University College, with its own Governing Council.

All University Colleges in the country were elevated to the status of full-fledged universities in 1977 by the Federal Government and Abdullahi Bayero University College became Bayero University, Kano (BUK) (backed by the promulgation of BUK Decree no 79 of 1979). Dr. Mahmud Tukur, the Principal of the University College became its pioneer Vice-Chancellor (1977-78) leading the team that placed the foundation and started the process that gave increase to the current perpetual site and the shape of the university as we know it today.

The following had all been Vice Chancellors of Bayero University Kano after Dr. Mahmud Tukur: Prof. James O.C. Ezeilo (1978- 79), Prof. Ibrahim H. Umar (1979-86), Prof. Dandatti Abdulkadir (1986-91), Prof. M. S. Zahraddeen (1991-95), Prof. B.B. Dambatta (1995-99), Prof. Musa Abdullahi (1999-2004), Prof. Danjuma A. Maiwada (Acting VC, 2004- 05), and Prof. Attahiru M. Jega (2005-July 2010), Prof. A.A Rasheed (2010 to 2015), Prof. Yahuza Bello (2015 to 2020), Prof. Sagir Adamu Abbas (2020 to date).

Who founded Bayero University?

Dr. Mahmud Tukur, the Principal of the University College became its pioneer Vice-Chancellor (1977-78) leading the team that placed the foundation and started the process that gave rise to the current permanent site and the shape of the university as we know it today. Mahmud Tukur was a Nigerian politician and former minister for Commerce and Industry during the administration of General Buhari. He was also a former director at Cadbury Nigeria. Tukur’s desirable position and capability displayed as the Vice Chancellor of Bayero University augmented his public profile in Northern Nigeria. He became friends with generations such as Mamman Daura, Adamu Ciroma, and Hamza Rafindadi Zayyad to form a small group of policy sponsors in Northern Nigeria. He died on April 9, 2021, at the age of 82 years.

What are the requirements for Bayero University?

Answer: Students applying to Bayero University are categorized into several groups based on type/level of degree being sorted after These are two broad levels namely Undergraduate and Postgraduate applicants.

Undergraduate Application

This group of candidates must have Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its correspondent. Depending on the supplementary qualification posed by an applicant, there are three ways to apply.

Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME)

Potential applicants must have sat for the UTME Examinations, must have applied for a course in Bayero University, Kano, and must have scored an aggregate to be resolute by the University before they are thought eligible in subjects applicable to the program applied for.

Potential candidates must have gotten a minimum of Five (5) passes at Credit level in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE or Corresponding) led by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) or the National Examinations Council (NECO) in not more than two (2) sittings, with a pass at credit level in both English and Mathematics and other subjects appropriate to the candidate’s chosen field of study. They would then be obligated to register and write a test (Post -UTME) which is led by the University.

Direct Entry

The common entry necessities for the Part-time degree programs are OND (with merit), NCE, IJMB (with a minimum of 8 points), GCE ‘A’ Level (3 credits), and HND (Pass). Applicants must also have all the necessary ‘O’ Level necessities applicable to the steady full-time undergraduate admissions. This means that credit in English is essential for all courses applied, while Mathematics is necessary for science-based courses and the social sciences.

Holders of ‘A’ Level certificate would be obligated to submit their qualifications for screening.

Part-time Degree

The general entry necessities for the Part-time degree programs are OND (with merit), NCE, IJMB (with a minimum of 8 points), GCE ‘A’ Level (3 credits), and HND (Pass). In addition to the ‘A’ Level qualifications stated above, candidates must also hold all the needed ‘O’ Level necessities appropriate to the regular full-time undergraduate admissions. This means that credit in English is required for all courses functional, while Mathematics is necessary for science-based courses and the social sciences.  Only applicants of twenty-five (25) years of age and above would be acknowledged. Applicants with only ‘O’ level results need not apply.

Postgraduate Application

All applicants for admission into Ph.D., M.Phil, M.A, M.Ed, M.Sc, M.En,g, and LLM Programs must provide accounts of their Academic Transcripts

Applicants for admission into Ph.D/M.Phil programs shall have M.A, M.Ed., M.Sc, M.Eng. or LLM Degrees in the applicable areas with CGPA of at least 3.50 on a scale of 0.00 to 5.00 from Bayero University, Kano, or any other recognized University.

Applicants for admission into M.A, M.Ed, M.Sc (Ed), MLS, M.Sc., M.Eng. and LLM programs must have:

A least of a Good Second Class Lower Degree in the applicable areas from Bayero University, Kan,o or any other recognized University.

A Degree plus University Postgraduate Diploma at Credit level in the appropriate areas from Bayero University, Kano, or any other recognized University.

For all Engineering programs, applicants must have Credit in English, Mathematics, Phy,s ics, and Chemistry.

Applicants for admission into MBA (Regular), MBF,  MHE, and MTM should have:

A minimum of a Good Second Class Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Management, Economics, Banking, and Finance from Bayero University, Kano, or any other familiar University.

A Degree or HND with a least of Lower Credit plus University Postgraduate Diploma with a least of Merit in the important areas from Bayero University, Kano, or any other acknowledged University

Applicants for admission into MBA (Special) should have at least Good Second Class Degree in any discipline from Bayero University or any other familiar University.

Applicants for admission into MHR should have a degree in Medicine, Nursing, and Biological Science from  Bayero University, Kano, or any other standard University.

Applicants for admission into MDS, MPPA, and MEM, MCMP shall have:

A Good Honors Degree with at least Second Class Lower in the applicable areas from Bayero University, Kano, or any other documented University.

A Degree or HND with a least of Lower Credit plus a Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum classification of Merit in the applicable areas from Bayero University, Kano
