About Central University of Technology

Bloemfontein, the capital of South Africa’s Free State province, is home to the Central University of Technology, Free State, or CUT. The “Technikon Free State” was founded there in 1981. It was elevated to the status of a university of technology as part of the South African government’s reform of tertiary education for the new millennium.

The institution has two campuses: one in Welkom, in the center of the Free State goldfields, and one in Bloemfontein, the country’s headquarters of justice. The two campuses provide educational possibilities in several technological sectors, such as science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), management sciences, humanities, and education.

There are around 800 academic and research staff members working at the Central University of Technology, who are divided across its four faculties. Four faculties—the Faculty of Health and Environmental Sciences, Faculty of Humanities, Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology (IT), and Faculty of Management Sciences—offer the available degrees. The university offers undergraduate certificates and diplomas in addition to advanced diplomas, postgraduate honors diplomas, master’s degrees, and doctoral degrees.

The increasing worldwide linkages, problems, and imperatives that the knowledge society in which CUT finds itself as a university of the twenty-first century has created have necessitated a realignment of the university’s vision, academic orientation, and purpose with this reality. The university’s reaction to this is internationalization, which includes scholarly endeavors to improve the academic program, promote intercultural cooperation and exchange, and increase worldwide participation.

As part of CUT’s internationalization strategy, the university keeps in touch with scholars and students from the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Germany, Belgium, Finland, the Netherlands, and China to forge international collaborations, improve the global community through education, and, most importantly, support South Africa’s participation in global markets and innovation. In exchange, these collaborations guarantee that CUT students not only possess the necessary industry skills but also possess a worldwide perspective and a grasp of global possibilities and challenges.
