The ML Sultan and Technikon Natal technikons merged to form the Durban University of Technology in April 2002. Along with the other technical universities, it was formerly known as the Durban Institute of Technology and later changed its name to the Durban University of Technology.
About Durban University of Technology
In KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, there are multiple campuses of the Durban University of Technology (DUT). The Durban Institute of Technology was its original name when it was established in 2002 as a result of the amalgamation of Technikon Natal and ML Sultan Technikon. There are two in Pietermaritzburg and five in Durban. There were over 31 991 students registered at DUT in 2022. One of just five technical universities on the African continent that provide doctoral degrees is the university.
The ML Sultan and Technikon Natal technikons merged to form the Durban University of Technology in April 2002. The Durban Institute of Technology was its original name; in 2007, it changed to Durban University of Technology. Indians first arrived in KwaZulu-Natal in the 1860s, mostly to work as indentured laborers on the sugar estates. Those without formal school credentials were threatened with repatriation in 1927. This threat prompted adult education classes in literacy and a variety of business topics to be given in a mission school and a Hindu Institute, but it wasn’t until after World War II, and with significant financial assistance from the public, that ML Sultan College was established.
However, it would take another ten years for the City Council to provide sufficient property for a permanent campus because they were now engaged with the structures of the first Group Areas Act of 1950.
When the Natal Technical College was established in 1907, it started charging more than 350 part-time students for tuition. This institution was also greatly impacted by the legal institutions that formalized apartheid. The college was taken over by the federal government’s department of education in 1955, and in 1967 it only admitted white students.
The DUT Business School was established by the Durban University of Technology in 2021. The Business School provides several Executive Education and short learning programs in addition to its new Masters in Business Administration (MBA) program, Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration (PDBA) programs, Higher Certificate programs, and other programs.
The DUT Business School also creates specialized, internal programs and works with for-profit, public, and corporate organizations to empower workers in a variety of fields. The university received its first-ever ranking by the Times Higher Education Global University Rankings in 2021. Within the top 500 universities worldwide and the top 5 in South Africa, it was ranked. Also, it was the first time in history that two of the province’s universities were among the top 5 in the nation. In 2022, DUT remained among the top five universities in South Africa (out of a total of 26), was the top technology university in the nation, and ranked in the top one-third of universities worldwide.
The university’s alumni are many. The DUT Convocation’s inaugural president in 2002 was Mr. Alan Khan. The Convocation’s current president and chair of the executive committee is Miss Zama Mncube. After being chosen to hold the role in 2022, she also made history by being the first female president of the DUT Convocation.
