The public technological university the Dedan Kimathi University of Technology (abbreviated DeKUT) is located in Nyeri, Kenya. It is one of the 22 public universities in Kenya. From 2007 until it was chartered on December 14, 2012, it was a constituent college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
Following the New Universities Act of 2012, it was the first university in Kenya to be chartered and the eighth public institution to be founded in the nation. It began as a middle-level, national technical and business-focused learning institution in 1972 and was upgraded to a constituent university college of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology in 2007 through a notice published in the Kenya Gazette to become a full-fledged university in three years. On December 14, 2012, President Mwai Kibaki presided over a ceremony in which stakeholders in higher education and government officials were present and gave the institution its charter.
Along the Nyeri – Mweiga route, it is situated 6 kilometers from Nyeri. The college’s property area is roughly 1,000 acres (4.0 km2), with 300 acres (1.2 km2) of undeveloped space for future growth, 350 acres (1.4 km2) of mature coffee, and 350 acres (1.4 km2) of natural woodland.
A multipurpose resource center’s development got underway on November 26th, 2008. In late 2010, the second of this project’s four phases were finished. It serves as the college’s primary center for events and activities.
In 1978, DeKUT opened for business as a technical college. Up until the award of the Charter in August 2007, it ran as a constituent university college. On December 14, 2012, DeKUT received a charter allowing it to confer degrees. The Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology oversees its operations. Through five schools and five institutes, DeKUT provides undergraduate and graduate-level academic programs. It is managed by a chosen University Council. Members of the council include the vice chancellor, chancellor, and permanent secretaries from the Ministries of Finance and Higher Education.

Dr. Jane Nyakang’o is the current Council Chair. The institution has a coffee farm that serves as its research hub for the study and development of coffee, as well as a wildlife sanctuary that is home to llamas, wildebeests, and zebras.
The first two phases of the resource center’s four phases are finished. The first and second phases serve as the center of the university’s academic activity and feature a library, lecture halls, laboratories, and supporting infrastructure. The ICT labs, lecture halls, offices, workshops, and supporting physics and chemistry labs are all located in the Academic Block. All engineering courses have access to the Advanced Manufacturing Training Center (ADMaTC) at the institution.
To shelter the majority of the students, private hostels have been established close to the institution. Rugby, football, hockey, basketball, and volleyball are all sports. Along with other inter-university competitions, it annually hosts the Mount Kenya 7s rugby tournament.
The Christian Union, Catholic Action, Presidential Awards Club, Touch Crew International, Actuarial Association of Kimathi, and the ICT Club are among the organizations and clubs.
