About Technical University of Mombasa
The Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) is a public university situated on Tom Mboya Avenue in the coastal city of Mombasa, Kenya. It is one of Kenya’s oldest institutions of higher learning. One of Kenya’s National Polytechnics was just upgraded to a full-fledged university. It received its charter in 2013 from Mwai Kibaki, who was president at the time.
The origins of TUM may be traced to the late 1940s, when the Mombasa Institute of Muslim Education was founded by Sir Philip Mitchell, Aga Khan III, the Sultan of Zanzibar, and Sir Bernard Reilly, Secretary of State for the Colonies. (MIOME). Following its founding, MIOME began offering technical training to Muslim students in East Africa.
To begin a technical education program with a focus on mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, seamanship and navigation, and woodworking, MIOME enrolled its first group of students in May 1951.
MIOME changed its name to Mombasa Technical Institute (MTI) in 1966 and began to accept students from all racial and religious backgrounds.
MTI changed its name to Mombasa Polytechnic in 1976. The five created Departments of Business Studies, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Building and Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Applied Sciences served as the foundation for Mombasa Polytechnic’s continuous development of increasingly market-driven programs. Mombasa Polytechnic was upgraded to a university college on August 23, 2007, via a legal notice; so, the school is now known as Mombasa Polytechnic University College. (MPUC).
Mombasa Polytechnic University College (MPUC), which has been upgraded to a full-fledged university, changed its name to Technical University of Mombasa in 2013. (TUM). TUM has established two important satellite campuses in the counties of Kwale and Lamu.
