About Enugu State University of Science and Technology

The University was founded as a multi-campus, non-residential school. With its main campus in Enugu, the university, which was founded on a presidential model based on Harvard University, quickly established itself as Nigeria’s first state university and university of technology. Later on, campuses were established at Abakiliki, Awka, and Nnewi. At the two operational campuses in Enugu and Awka, just three faculties—Engineering, Science, and Technology—were formed at the time.

Major policy changes and reorganizations in 1985 led to the merger of the University with its sister polytechnic, IMT, as well as the introduction of new programs. At that time, new faculties for education, environmental sciences, health sciences, law, social sciences, management sciences, and agricultural sciences, among other fields, were established.

Up until December 1986, when it was demerged, the two amalgamated institutions operated ineffectively under a single Interim Joint Council (IJC), with Prof. Onwumechili serving as President and Proc. J.C. Ene of IMT serving as Deputy.

The four campuses began operating in earnest in 1987, with the Abakaliki campus housing agricultural sciences and veterinary medicine, the Awka campus housing basic applied sciences, law, and social sciences, the Nnewi campus housing health sciences including medicine and dentistry, and the main campus in Enugu housing engineering, technology, management sciences, and other subjects. A Deputy Vice-Chancellor served as the campus’ administrative leader. Following the separation of the former Anambra State into Enugu State in 1991, the new government’s name was changed from ASUTECH to ESUT.

At that time, the Enugu and Abakiliki campuses combined to establish ESUT, while the two former ASUTECH campuses in Awka and Nnewi became the State University for Anambra State, which has since been taken over by the Federal Government and renamed Nnamdi Azikiwe University.

The main campus, the logo, color, song, philosophy, ambitions, and objectives of the previous ASUTECH were all kept and accepted by ESUT.

Students of Applied Natural Sciences and Social Sciences were housed at the new campus that this repackaged university, ESUT, created at Adada Nkpologwu in the Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area. When Ebonyi State was formed in 1996 by combining the former Enugu and Abia States, ESUT lost access to its campus in Abakaliki, which includes its colleges of agriculture and medicine. Naturally, the newly created state of Ebonyi turned the campuses into what is now Ebonyi State University (EBSU). The College of Health Sciences at ESUT, on the other hand, was reinstated at Nsukka until 2005 when it was transferred to Parklane Enugu and renamed the ESUT College of Medicine/Teaching Hospital.

The University, led by Professor Ikechukwu Chidobem as vice chancellor, moved from its temporary location at Independence Layout Enugu on February 14, 2006, to a suitable permanent building created in Nkanu West L.G.A. and given the name Ebeano City.
