Geology and Mining Course

I’ll walk you through the O-level subject combinations you need to study geology and mining on this page.

For you to study geology and mining in Nigerian universities, you must be a science student with a solid foundation in science topics. This is only feasible if you meet the admissions standards. Answers to inquiries about the O-level and A-level admission requirements are provided on this website.

To put it another way, the screening documents needed for admission to Nigerian universities, are the WAEC subject combination (requirements), JAMB UTME subject combination (prerequisites), Direct Entry requirements, Special consideration (waivers), and the requirements for Direct Entry.

WAEC subject combination (requirements) for Geology and Mining

To study geology and mining in Nigerian universities, you must have at least 5 credits in the required WAEC subject combination. Other O’level exams, such as NECO and GCE, also accept this combination of subjects. Geology and mining require the following WAEC topic combinations (O-level requirements):

  • Mathematics
  • Any other subject
  • A trade subject
  • English Language
  • Biology
  • Chemistry

Anyone taking the WAEC or other O-level exams must take the subjects listed as they are required. You should include a language in your O-level studies, I will advise. For the record, the Yoruba language is required for geology and mining if you are one of those applicants seeking admission to any universities, colleges, or polytechnics in Lagos State. Now that you are aware of the O-level subjects you must take to study geology and mining, let’s look at the criteria for the JAMB UTME and Direct exams.

JAMB UTME subject combination (requirements) for Geology and Mining

Your admission to the University or other schools is handled by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB). English must be included because it is required even though it may not be listed among the JAMB subjects below, and I will frankly advise you to aim for a score of 200 and above in the JAMB UTME instead of 180 to be on the safe side because anything short of that may prevent you from admission or post UTME. Now, I’ll show you the mandatory JAMB subjects for Geology and Mining that you must register for. Of course, you might think about the College of Education or Polytechnic if your score is less than 180.

Please take note that math is not a requirement for this course if it is not stated as a Jamb subject in this post. There are other ways to get into Nigerian universities to study geology and mining except through JAMB. If you’re struggling with the JAMB UTME, it could be time to pass via the IJBM, JUBEB, ND, HND, or Predegree programs instead!..

  • JAMB UTME subject combination to study Geology and Mining must include any three of the following
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Biology and Geography

Direct Entry requirement (required A-level result) to study Geology and Mining

To be admitted to a university to continue your education, you must also have two ‘A’ level passes in Geology and Mining, Chemistry, Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Geography, in addition to the combination of WAEC subjects that is required for this major.

Don’t give up if you already have your O-level results and your subject combinations don’t match the prerequisites for studying geology and mining at the college you want to attend. You should think about alternative degrees in geology and mining that are comparable, or look into courses connected to education at a polytechnic or college. You can also apply for a scholarship to study abroad and take classes online at a foreign university from the comfort of your own home. It’s now possible to choose your educational path. And before you decide which university to attend, read helpful advice on how to select a course and institution.

Geology and Mining is how many years course?

You will spend four years studying Geology and Mining if you are admitted to a university in Nigeria to pursue a degree in the subject through the JAMB UTME. You will take this course for three years if you are admitted through direct entry. Naturally, if you have an extension, there is potential for additional years due to carryover courses.

Geology and mining are under the Faculty/School/College of Science but may be in a different faculty in some universities in Nigeria, according to JAMB, the organization in charge of determining your entrance to the university or other institutions.

Can a commercial or an art student study Geology and Mining?

No!  Geology and mining are pure science courses that require a strong foundation in science, hence commercial or art students are not eligible to enroll in the program. If you want to avoid becoming discouraged, you can enroll in this course if you choose, as long as your O-level results include the required combination of topics. It could be challenging to switch subjects during WAEC registration if you are still in secondary school because some institutions may not allow it.

Make sure you are aware of the subjects being registered for you during WAEC or NECO registration as some secondary schools are not aware of the significance of O-level requirements for university courses. The required subject combinations for geology and mining can also be registered through GCE.

Exceptional Review

I am now sure that you are aware of the required WAEC subjects for geology and mining. But take note: Some Universities may accept D7 or E8 in place of Credit in some required subjects. And some people might agree or disagree with two sittings. Combinations of WAEC, NECO, or GCE results make up that.
