FUK is an institution of higher learning dedicated to excellence and integrity in the pursuit of knowledge within a setting that respects diversity, the worth of the individual, academic freedom, a commitment to service learning, and a shared responsibility for applying knowledge and skills to address the interrelated issues that affect the local, national, and global communities.

About Federal University Kashere

One of the new federal universities established by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 2010 to improve access and guarantee equity among all the States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory in terms of the presence of federal tertiary institutions was Federal University, Kashere (FUK). FUK strives to be a top-tier institution of higher learning that would draw and educate intelligent and talented young people from various origins in Gombe State, Nigeria, and elsewhere to become tomorrow’s leaders.

To address the twin issues of access and equitable educational development of States in the Federation, the then-Minister of State for Education, Olorogun Kenneth O. Gbagi, presented a memorandum to the Federal Executive Council at its 39th Meeting on Wednesday, 10th November 2010, requesting the establishment of 44 additional tertiary institutions nationwide.

However, based on justice and access, Council, in its wisdom, sanctioned the creation of twelve new universities. Under this initiative’s Phase I, nine universities were given the go-ahead for immediate operation. Following the aforementioned approval, the Honourable Minister of State for Education, Olorogun Kenneth O. Gbagi, established a 12-member Committee, headed by Prof. Julius A. Okojie, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, to develop the modalities for the location and launch of these universities, among other tasks. On Monday, November 15, 2010, the Technical Committee’s report was delivered to the Honorable Minister, meeting the time set by the Minister for the submission of the report.

The Honourable Minister of Education, Pro. Ruqqayat Ahmed Rufa’I, OON, visited the designated States for the nine universities—drawn from all geopolitical zones—to launch effectively. He was accompanied by the Director (Tertiary Education), the Federal Ministry of Education, and the Executive Secretaries of NUC and ETF. Permanent and take-off locations were founded with the help of the State Governments. Thereafter, the Federal Executive Council gave its approval to these. Also, the council authorized the use of 1.5 billion from the Education Trust Fund for each university (ETF).

One of the nine universities selected for launch as part of that initiative’s Phase I was FUK. Mr. President, on February 7, 2011, Vice Chancellors and Registrars were chosen by His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, in his position as Visitor to the nine newly founded federal universities. On Wednesday, February 9, 2011, the Honourable Minister of Education held a news conference in the conference room of the Federal Ministry of Education Headquarters in Abuja to announce the appointments. The Executive Governor of Gombe State was formally introduced to FUK’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Kabiru Farouk, and Registrar, Dr. Abubakar Aliyu Bafeto, on March 1st, 2011.

In addition to these, the university has developed a cordial and profitable relationship with the Gombe State Government, from which it has already benefited. In exchange, the institution has committed to constructing a pre-degree program to meet the needs of the state’s natives.

As a requirement of the NUC for all new universities in Nigeria, the University Administration created this Academic Brief with assistance from consultants in Nigerian institutions. But, it is more crucial to provide good planning to steer the operations of the university from genesis to maturity. The Academic Brief covers the university’s structure during its peak expansion as well as the first 10 years of development from the 2011–12 session to the 2020–21 session.
