About Garissa University

On August 12, 2011, Legal Notice No. 116, the Moi University Act (Cap. 210A), and the Garissa University College Order were all passed, establishing the Garissa University as a constituent college of Moi University. The University became the first of its kind in the North-Eastern Region and a fully committed public university on October 23, 2017. One of the greatest terrorist attacks occurred at Garissa University College on April 2, 2015. That morning, armed assailants assaulted the university campus. Others were held prisoner as some kids were shot at. The University was shut down as a result of this horrific and inhumane act, which claimed 148 lives.

After the former University College was closed on April 2, 2015, as a result of the terror attack, Garissa University began teaching and learning activities in January 2016, however, only a small portion of the almost 900 accepted students attended. The number of students at the university has steadily increased since that time. Approximately 2000 students are enrolled in the institution overall at this time.
