About Great Zimbabwe University

The Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) is a university in the Zimbabwean city of Masvingo. Seven kilometers east of the Masvingo CBD, it is currently located on the campus of the Masvingo Teachers’ College. The university currently operates several sites in and around the city, including those in the densely populated suburb of Mucheke, most notably the School of Tourism and Hospitality, which is perched atop what was formerly a hotel. Among the campuses in the heart of the city are the Herbert Chitepo law school and the library. Along the Bulawayo highway, there are additional recently constructed campuses to the west of the city in the industrial area.

A second campus can be found at Mashava, a mining town 40 kilometers to the west of Masvingo. The university’s namesake, the Great Zimbabwe National Monument, will soon be close to a larger campus.

Great Zimbabwe University was one of several colleges the government built following the country’s independence in 1980. Its predecessor, Masvingo State University (MASU), was founded in response to the 1995 Chetsanga Report’s recommendations. According to the paper, teachers and technical colleges should transition into degree-granting organizations that will eventually become universities in their own right. In 1999–2000, a university college affiliated with the University of Zimbabwe was established. A Parliamentary Act established the independent Masvingo State University two years later. Two years later, the institution’s name was changed to Great Zimbabwe University.

The institution offers degree and diploma programs in the arts, business, education, and sciences at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The programs are made to adapt to the demands of the labor market in Zimbabwe’s dynamic economy.
