Indian Ocean University

Indian Ocean University (IOU), sometimes referred to as IOU: (Jaamacadda Bedweynta Hindiya), is the oldest private, nonprofit institution of higher learning in Somalia. It is situated in the capital city of Mogadishu.

About Indian Ocean University

The University, a private, nonprofit organization that was founded in 1993, is recognized as a higher education institution by the Ministry of Higher Education and Culture.

All of Somalia’s institutions, including the sole public university, Somali National University, fell victim to the country’s civil conflict in 1991. Somali intellectuals came together on May 3, 1993, and decided that it was their responsibility to assist the next generation. They established Indian Ocean University, also known as IOU, and a dedicated campus on airport road in KM4 square, which is located about one kilometer (0.6 miles) from Aden Adde International Airport to fill the higher education void left by the collapse.

Indian Ocean University (IOU) welcomed its first class of students in September 1993. They began studying in a few select academic fields, including business administration and nursing. The head of state is Samawade Ali-Dahir.
