About Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology
The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) is a public university that can be found at Exit 15 of the Nairobi-Thika Superhighway in Juja, 36 kilometers northeast of Nairobi. The institution provides courses in engineering, business, technology, and building sciences. Engineering and biotechnology are particularly significant subjects for the college. Aden Duale, the former Leader of Majority in the 11th Kenyan Parliament, Emma Miloyo, a well-known architect who served as the first female President of the Architectural Association of Kenya, and Dr. Paul Chepkwony, the first Governor of Kenya’s Kericho County and former lecturer, are among the notable graduates.
As a middle-level institution known as the Jomo Kenyatta Institution of Agriculture and Technology (JKCAT), the university was founded in 1981 by the Kenyan government with funding from the Japanese government. Planning for the creation of JKCAT began in 1977. Jomo Kenyatta, the president of Kenya, gave 200 hectares of farmland for the construction of the institution in the early part of 1978. On May 4, 1981, the first cohort of students was admitted. JKUAT was formally inaugurated on March 17, 1982, by the new president Daniel Arap Moi.
Graduates in agricultural engineering, food technology, and horticulture received diploma certificates at the first graduation ceremony, which took place in April 1984. Following the Kenyatta University Act, Moi declared JKUAT a constituent college of Kenyatta University on September 1st, 1988. (CAP 210C). Jomo Kenyatta University College of Agriculture and Technology is the new official name of JKUAT. (JKUAT). On December 7, 1994, it was formally constituted as a university by the JKUAT Act, 1994.
118 PhDs were awarded by the university in June 2019, 89 of which came from the College of Human Resource Development. The Commission for University Education announced that it would look into claims of violations of the norms governing supervisor-to-student ratios and peer review.
Some of the students can stay at the university for discounted rates. Inside the school grounds, there are six dorms for students, three of which are occupied by boys and three by females. Males live in Halls 3, 5, and 6, while ladies live in Halls 1, 2, and 4.
The Candle in the Wind, Main Mess, and Hall Six dining mess are the three student dining cafeterias. The dining mess offers subsidized food rates. Breakfast is offered from 6.30 to 8.00 am, lunch is from 11 to 2 pm, and dinner is from 5 to 8 pm.
The university features a library with a 600-seat capacity and 80,000 books in its collection. In addition, the library provides additional crucial services such as photocopying, binding, and repair as well as online services, reference, interlibrary loans, user education, orientation, and online information services. Season of Vipers by Tuti Danis Odongo is one of the books that are available in the library.
JKUAT was chosen as the host university in February 2010 by the Pan African University’s regional institute for East and Central Africa. The post-graduate Institute on Basic Sciences, Technology, and Innovation would be located on the Main Campus in Juja, and it would begin accepting students in September 2011. In July 2010 it was finally determined that Kenya will serve as the regional institute’s host country after a protracted debate. The JKUAT campus serves as home to the African Institute for Capacity Development. (AICAD).
A project of the African Union, the Pan African University, Institute of Basic Sciences, Technology, and Innovation (PAUIST) is housed at JKUAT. The Chinese government consented to provide financial support for the construction of the institution’s facilities, including its classrooms, residence halls, and laboratories. An eight-person Chinese delegation led by Yin Youhua and the Kenyan Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, represented by Bernard Malenga and JKUAT Vice-Chancellor Mabel Imbuga, signed the agreement on April 25, 2012.
