About Kenya Highlands University

Kenya Highlands University is a fully accredited (Chartered) private institution of higher education. It was formerly known as Kenya Highlands Evangelical University. It is situated in Kenya’s Kericho.

The Kenya Highlands Bible College, which later evolved into the University, inherited its educational philosophy from World Gospel Mission missionaries who recognized the importance of educating their converts in 1932. Not only did this education need to address biblical and ministry-related topics, but it also required to include teacher preparation. For the sixteen elementary schools the mission had opened, teachers were ready. The first teachers also performed the role of local preachers. A Teacher’s Bible School originally began in the Sotik region in 1936, meeting in several locations.

The Sotik Bible School was established in 1944, and courses continued to incorporate Bible study and training methods for elementary school teachers. The following year, as the church’s need for skilled leadership rose, the Bible School students and the teacher training group were divided. The school was moved from Sotik to Cheptenye in the Belgut region in 1950.

Another property was sought that would be independent of the previous mission stations due to the need for a greater area to create classrooms, dorms, library and chapel facilities, and staff housing. Kenya Highlands Bible School, which offers a two-year Bible education leading to the Christian Workers Certificate, opened its doors in 1955 after the current location was acquired in 1953. The curriculum was upgraded in 1957 to include a three-year program leading to a Bible diploma.

The name was changed to Kenya Highlands Bible College in 1962, and the level of admission and instruction was once more raised to offer secondary-level instruction in both religious and secular topics. The institution began providing secondary school instruction in 1967 and continued doing so until 1973 when it stopped giving the “O” level. The Bible College Council was established in 1970 and given the duty of overseeing the college and raising academic standards. Members of the council were drawn equally from the church and the mission.

First, post-secondary students were accepted into the college’s four-year program in 1971. The curriculum was based on degree-granting Bible universities in North America and led to the awarding of the Bachelor of Religion in Biblical Studies.

The Commission for Higher Education registered the college as a private college in 1989, and it is currently a candidate for accreditation. To bring facilities and academic programs up to accepted College standards, the College Council and Administration have been holding frequent meetings with the Commission.

The Africa Gospel Church and World Gospel Mission have continuously improved and expanded their educational training programs to meet the needs of the church and the community. The college’s ongoing efforts to be true to scriptural truth and culturally relevant are reflected in the current phase of upgrading to Kenya Highlands Evangelical College, which has the educational goal of preparing students for ministry through academic excellence and hands-on experience.
