About Mount Kenya University
Kenya’s municipal town of Thika is home to Mount Kenya University (MKU), a private university with multiple campuses. With an estimated 52,000 students as of September 2015, the university, which was established by Professor Simon N. MKU’s main campus is in Thika, which is 29 miles (47 km) by road northeast of Nairobi, Kenya’s capital and largest city. Simon Gicharu, a doctor, founded the organization presently known as the Thika Institute of Technology in 1996. The institute initially offered management- and computer-focused studies. The Institute then received full registration permission from the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology Kenya in the same year, making it a full-fledged institution of higher learning.
As the first privately-owned institution in Kenya to acquire approval from the Pharmacy and Poisons Board of the Kenya Ministry of Health to offer training to pharmaceutical technologists, the institute made another significant milestone in 2005.
The institute requested collaboration with JKUAT in 2006, and the Commission for Higher Education (CHE), afterward known as the Commission for University Education Kenya (CUE), approved the request. Following the completion of all procedures, the Commission for Higher Education permitted MKU to launch a fully functional privately funded university. On the advice of the Commission of Higher Education, the Kenyan government granted the institution a charter in 2011.
The Thika Institute of Technology, the university’s forerunner, was created in 1996 to serve as a computer outreach program. This is when the idea for the creation of the university first emerged. In this period of Kenyan history, the growth of Information Communication Technology (ICT), including mobile telephony and computer technology, had begun to pick up speed in both urban and rural areas.
The Institute transformed into a commercial college offering management and computer training programs in the year 2000. Later in the year, the Institute received full registration permission from the Ministry of Education Science and Technology, which acknowledged it as a full-fledged institution of higher learning.
In 2002, the institute started training programs in paramedical, information technology, and business and entrepreneurship education to stay current with the training requirements of society.
The Pharmacy and Poisons Board of the Ministry of Health approved the Institute as the first private institution in Kenya to train pharmaceutical technologists in the year 2005.
The Institute requested collaboration with JKUAT to provide both diploma and degree programs in 2006. This proposal was confirmed and granted by the Commission for Higher Education (CHE) in 2006. Following the predetermined requirements for creating a privately funded university, the Institute continued to collaborate closely with the Commission for Higher Education.
The Commission for Higher Education granted MKU the authority to establish a full-fledged privately funded university with Thika Institute of Technology as its precursor/forerunner after it met all the requirements outlined in the guidelines for setting up a privately funded university (1989 rules).
