About National Defence University-Kenya
In the 1970s, the idea to encourage General Service Officers (GSOs) to pursue higher education at the university first emerged. But this dream came true in 1996 when General (Rtd) Daudi Tonje was appointed Chief of the General Staff (CGS) and instituted a plan for GSO cadets to advance academically from a certificate to a diploma at the Kenya Military Academy.
Later, in 2015, the notion of establishing a university to deliver instruction and training in defense security was brought up again. This was done in response to the weaknesses found in the current partnerships/collaborations with regional public universities. These flaws called for a facility with the education resources and expertise to promote the integration of theory and practice, a key component of defense and security training. This led to the formation of a task force with the instruction to apply for a Charter under Section 24 of the Universities Act 2012 to offer specialized degrees. The task force was made up of personnel from the Ministries of Defence and Education as well as other stakeholders.
To provide specialized certificates, diplomas, and degrees in fields related to defense and security, as well as other aspects of security, the NDU-K was founded on May 27, 2021, following Section 24 of the Universities Education Act, 2012. In addition, the National Intelligence Research University College (NIRUC) was formed as a constituent college of the National Defense University College by Legal Notice No. 96 on June 11, 2021.
The NDU-K will work to: strengthen the already-existing partnerships and capacities to improve service delivery; provide the MoD with a vehicle to shape policy and strategy-making discourse in the area and globally; and serve as a focal point for the establishment of a security and strategy think tank.
The National Defence College (NDC), the Defence Staff College (DSC), the Kenya Military Academy (KMA), the Defence Forces Technical College (DEFTEC), and the International Peace Support Training Centre (IPSTC) are among the KDF institutions, and schools that are combined under NDU-K. The consolidation of these institutions under the auspices of NDU-K offers opportunities for resource sharing, quality control, synchronization of training and educational programs, and the creation of a single certification mechanism.
In addition to aligning its training and academic programs with the Kenya National Qualifications Framework (KNQF) to enable the awarding of credits, credit transfer, and encouragement of lifelong learning in the defense and security spheres, NDU-K complies with legal and policy frameworks as directed by the national regulatory authorities governing university education.
