About Nimba University
On September 16, 2010, Nimba University (NU) was established as a Nimba County Community College (NCCC) by an Act of the 52nd National Legislature of Liberia. Through an Act passed by the National Legislature of Liberia on August 31, 2021, and approved by the President of Liberia, His Excellency George Manneh Weah, on September 27, 2021, the college was upgraded to a full-fledged university to grant bachelor’s degrees after eleven years of successful operations.
The past of Nimba University, formerly the Nimba County Community College, has been filled with difficulties, triumphs, and experiences. This tale exemplifies the unwavering resolve of a dedicated team of experts and realizes the collective hope and aspiration of the Nimba People, which was established and fostered by the torchbearers of education in Nimba County. As part of her campaign pledge to decentralize higher education in Liberia, Her Excellency, Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of Liberia (2006–2017), inspired the creation of the school.
Dr. Yar Donlah Gonway-Gono’s tenure as president (October 2010–July 8, 2018) Her Excellency Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia, named Dr. Yar Donlah Gonway-Gono to serve as the institution’s first and innovative president in October 2010. Therefore, Dr. Gono set out to hire qualified and experienced professionals from a variety of backgrounds to create a vibrant and competitive academic and professional institution.
The Nimba County Community College (NCCC), now the Nimba University (NU), officially started full academic and operational activities on September 19, 2011, with a total of 77 employees, including 34 academic staff, 21 security and maintenance staff, and 4 senior administrative staff. There were also 18 junior administrative and support staff. In September 2011, the college had a total enrollment of 438 students. Dr. Gono served the Nimba County Community College (NCCC), which is now the Nimba University (NU), from October 2010 to July 8, 2018, when she was fired because of a change in the way the country was run.
