About Riara University

Nairobi, Kenya’s Mbagathi Way is home to the private university Riara University. A fifteen-minute drive from Nairobi’s Central Business District is the university’s main campus, which is located in Kibera, Nairobi County, right close to Nyayo Highrise Estate.

Daniel Gachukia and Eddah Gachukia, a husband and wife team, created Riara University in 2012. In addition, the couple served as the founding directors of The Riara Group of Schools, which includes a girls’ secondary school as well as two kindergartens, two primary schools, and two preschools.

The university was created by the Universities Act (2012) and has been operating under a Letter of Interim Authority since August 2, 2012, when the Commission for University Education gave its blessing. The university has already undertaken the Technical Inspection by the Commission for University Education and is currently undergoing accreditation for the Award of Full Charter in compliance with the Act’s provisions. The institution is hoping for swift approval of the Charter.

The Council of Legal Education has granted the university full accreditation. According to the Legal Education Act (2012), among other duties, the Council of Legal Education (CLE) is mandated by law to regulate legal education and training in Kenya. The institution is a training center and an examinations center with full accreditation from the Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (KASNEB). Under this accreditation, the university offers courses for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Secretary (CS), and Accounting Technicians Diploma (ATD).

All teachers hired by the Teachers Service Commission are required to participate in the Teacher Professional Development Program (TPD), which was implemented by the Ministry of Education in 2021. One of the universities in Kenya that offers this program is Riara University. This is meant to aid in the evaluation of teachers’ performance and their professional growth, a topic on which stakeholders in the education system, particularly teachers, have differing opinions.
