About Scott Christian University

Kenya’s Machakos is home to Scott Christian University (SCU), a private Christian university. In 1997, Scott was granted university status; in 2012, it changed its name to reflect the current name. As the national theological college of the Africa Inland Church Kenya, Scott Christian University, formerly known as Scott Theological College, was founded in 1962 to offer advanced academic instruction for church ministries. The college bears Peter Cameron Scott’s name since he oversaw the establishment of the Africa Inland Church as one of its ministries while serving as the missionary organization’s leader in Kenya in 1895.

The academic requirements at Scott were raised as it expanded. A Secondary School Certificate, Level Three, was made the minimum admission requirement in 1972.

With the establishment of the Bachelor of Theology (B.Th. ), which raised the program’s entry requirement to a university level, standards were further raised. An agreement with Ontrario Bible College, a recognized university in Toronto, Canada, made this growth feasible. The college awarded its first B.Th. degree in 1986.

The Accrediting Council for Theological Education in Africa (ACTEA) granted Scott its accreditation in December 1979. This accreditation was granted to it as the first postsecondary theological institution in Africa. Scott’s Bachelor of Theology degree program received full approval from ACTEA in 1986.

In 1997, Scott was given a charter by the Kenyan government after making changes to its operations and academic programs. At the same time, the Commission for University Education approved its Bachelor of Theology degree as a university-level degree. On March 23, 2012, the Commission for University Education authorized the university to alter its name to Scott Christian University.

To improve a wider spectrum of service and ministry for the transformation of society, the university has since increased the range of academic programs it offers. Currently, there are three schools at the university: the School of Theology, the School of professional studies, and the School of Education.
