Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), previously Katsina State University, was created by the Katsina State Government in 2006.

Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), previously Katsina State University, was created by the Katsina State Government in 2006, to “serve as a center for the socio-economic, technological and political development of the State by creating highly skilled human resources through conventional face-to-face and distance learning modes.”

About Umaru Musa Yar’adua University 

Umaru Musa Yar’adua, formerly the executive governor of Katsina State and later the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, instigated the work of constructing the university before his death in 2010.

The law launching the Katsina State University was agreed upon by the Katsina State House of Assembly on 5 September 2006, and the University started academic activities in January 2007 with three faculties (Education, Humanities, and Natural and Applied Sciences), and 16 undergraduate programmes. The State House of Assembly approved a law changing the name of the university to honor Umaru Musa Yar’adua on 8 April 2009.

The first 25 years of the university’s being have been separated into four stages—three phases of 5 years each, tailed by a 10-year phase. In each phase, the university will add faculties, departments, and academic programmes, until it has a total of 13 faculties, 76 departments, and 236 academic programmes (undergraduate and postgraduate).

The Visitor of the University is the aiding governor of the state (presently Aminu Bello Masari); the Chancellor is Nigeria’s one-time Minister of Economic Development, Dr. Umaru Mutallab; and the present Vice-Chancellor (as of 2021) is Professor Sanusi Mamman.

Who founded UMYU?

Answer: Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University (UMYU), formerly Katsina State University was created by the Katsina State Government out of the wish to advance access to higher education for its citizenry.

What are the requirements for UMYU?

Answer: UTME: Applicants for admission into the four (4) year degree programme in any of the faculties in the University should own a Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or General Certificate of Education (GCE) or National Examination Council (NECO) certificate, or their corresponding, with at minimum five (5) credit passes, plus Mathematics and English Language. Particulars of the remaining credits obligatory for registration are resolute by the departments. Applicants must also write the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and get a satisfactory score in Use of English and three (3) other subjects applicable to the planned course of study as set out in the JAMB brochure.

Direct Entry: Applicants for Direct Entry (DE) admission must own five (5) ‘O’ level credits in Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSCE) or General Certificate of Education (GCE) or National Examination Council (NECO) certificate, or their correspondent, gotten at not more than two sittings. The credits must contain English and Mathematics. Note that at minimum three of the credits should apply to the programme functional. In addition, applicants must have at least a Diploma, NCE, IJMB, or their correspondent, applicable to the course functional. The least necessities for DE admission are:

a) OND in a related discipline from a documented institution with at minimum a Lower Credit, totaling five (5) O/Level credits passed at not more than two sittings;

 b) HND in an applicable discipline from a documented institution with at least a Lower Credit, in addition to five (5) O/Level credits passed at not more than two sittings;

c) NCE in an applicable discipline from a familiar institution with a minimum of nine (9) points, in addition to five (5) O/Level credits passed at not more than two sittings; 20

d) IJMB in applicable subjects from a familiar institution with at least nine (9) points, in addition to five (5) O/Level credits approved at not more than two sittings;

e) In addition to the overall necessities above, applicants must meet departmental admission necessities as specified by the faculty.

English Language Requirement:

 a) Credit in the English Language at SSCE, NECO, GCE O/Level, or their corresponding.

b) Merit in the English Language in TC Grade II Examination.

c) A Pass in the English Language in HSC A/Level

Mathematics Requirement:

a) Credit in Mathematics at SSCE, NECO, GCE O/Level, or their correspondent.

b) Merit in Mathematics in TC Grade II Examination.

c) A Pass in Mathematics in HSC A/Level

Transfer Candidates: Applicants who want to transfer into confidential degree programmes should have a least CGPA of 2.00, while those for non-classified degree programmes should have a minimum CGPA of 2.40, all of which are subject to receipt by the applicable department(s).

Who is UMYU’s, Vice Chancellor?

Answer: Professor Sunusi Mamman is the vice chancellor of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University. He is selected as the university’s practical vice chancellor after the tenure of former vice-chancellor, Professor Idris Isa Funtua, who has died. Professor Sunusi Mamman was the acting vice chancellor of the university from February to June 2015 and the deputy vice-chancellor (administration) of the university from 2014 to 2016. A Professor of Special Needs Education with a distinct interest in Cognitive Exceptionalities.
