Umma University (UMMA)

The first Islamic faith-based university to be chartered in Kenya is Umma University. The University’s guiding ideas, precepts, and values are based on Islam, with a focus on the whole development of each individual’s talent, moral uprightness, hard effort, and competitiveness to promote excellence in all areas of life. It is committed to advancing social transformation based on Islamic values and encouraging harmonious coexistence between individuals of many faiths, races, ethnicities, and genders.

To meet the technological and professional demands of the twenty-first century, the national goals and objectives of Vision 2030, the medium-term plans of Vision 2030, the Kenyan counties integrated development plans, and the global Sustainable Development Goals, the university integrates its philosophy within disciplines in Applied Arts and Sciences.

About Umma University

The Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies, which served as the university’s predecessor, was founded in 1997. Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies was registered by the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology in 2001 to provide diploma study programs in these fields.

The Thika College diploma programs were approved by the previous Commission for Higher Education in 2007, and permission was given to work with the International University of Africa in Khartoum, Sudan, to offer two undergraduate degree study programs, the Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Sharia and the Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies. The Thika College for Sharia and Islamic Studies received a Letter of Interim Authority from the Kenyan National Regulatory Agency, the Commission for Higher Education, on July 23, 2013, allowing it to operate as Umma University. On the Commission’s advice, the University Council moved the University from Thika to Kajiado in August 2014.

On October 18, 2019, H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta granted the University a charter.
