Unity University (TUU), which is located in Somaliland, is the first authorized non-profit institution in Africa. About Unity University

Ethiopia’s Unity University is a private institution of higher learning. It is the first privately held institution of higher learning in Ethiopia to receive full university status from the Ministry of Education. It is also the first private institution in the nation to provide postgraduate courses leading to master’s degrees in development economics and business administration (MBA) (MA). English, Arabic, French, and Italian language lessons were available at Unity Language School, which opened its doors in 1991. Less than 50 students, a few part-time instructors, and office staff made up the initial enrollment.

Between 1997 and 1999, the institute gradually introduced diploma programs in office management, secretarial science, marketing, accounting, and business. After its success in education, the institute was elevated to a college level in March 1998, becoming Ethiopia’s first privately owned institution of higher learning. The institute has a sterling track record of pioneering the delivery of high-quality education over the years. The institution started degree programs in a variety of subjects and was later renamed Unity College. In September 2008, Unity was elevated to the status of a university, making it the first privately owned institution. Since then, it is known as Unity University (U.U.).

The university fosters research and hosts yearly multidisciplinary conferences in addition to its position as an educational institution. The Ethiopian Journal of Business and Development, the organization’s academic publication, publishes the conference proceedings.

The community service initiatives at Unity University are also quite active. It is interested in environmental conservation initiatives and has taken part in the “Clean and Green Addis Ababa” campaign. Unity has also taken part in various campaigns for HIV and AIDS prevention and awareness run by the Addis Abeba city council and chamber of business.

The institution provides scholarships to students who need them, and one of these is a girls’ project that helps worthy female students who are struggling financially. Additionally, it awards scholarships to its employees who want to advance their academic standing as well as to kids who excel in sports and other extracurricular activities.

As of January 2012, there were 5,193 students registered, with 324 in the postgraduate program, 4,313 in undergraduate studies, and 556 in TVET programs, including online learning and continuing education courses offered at its various centers. Sixteen of the seventy-six academic employees at Unity are female.
