About the University of Botswana
The first higher education facility in Botswana was founded in 1982 and is called the University of Botswana (UB). The institution has three campuses: one in Francistown, one in Maun, and one in Gaborone, the country’s capital. The university is divided into six faculties: Sir Ketumile Masire Teaching Hospital, Business, Education, Engineering, Humanities, Health Sciences, Science, and Social Sciences.
The University of Bechuanaland (Botswana), Basotoland (Lesotho), and Swaziland (UBBS), which was established in 1964 to lessen the reliance of the three nations on tertiary education in South Africa during the apartheid era, is where UB got its start.

The late President Sir Seretse Khama initiated this fundraising effort, formally called the Botswana University Campus Appeal (BUCA), in 1976. The goal of the campaign was to gather money for the University of Botswana and Swaziland’s Botswana Campus building.
BUCA came after the Lesotho government unilaterally nationalized a joint-university campus building in Roma. To reach the goal of one million rands, Batswana (People of Botswana) and other stakeholders contributed in a variety of ways (cash, cattle, grain, eggs, etc.). The University of Botswana was established in 1982 and is still the nation’s oldest institution of higher learning. The university’s major statue, which is situated in front of the new library, honors the One Man, One Beast (motho le motho kgomo) movement even today.
