About the University of Burundi
A state institution in Bujumbura, Burundi is known as the University of Burundi (abbreviated UB or Université du Burundi). It was established in 1964, with eight faculties, five institutes, and over 13,000 students enrolled. Its headquarters are located on three campuses in Bujumbura and one in Gitega. It was given its present name in 1977 and is the sole publicly sponsored university in Burundi.
The Agronomy Institute of the University of the Belgian Congo and Ruanda-Urundi, established during Belgian colonial authority, is where the University of Burundi had its start. This moved to Bujumbura in 1960 and changed its name to the Agronomical Institute of Ruanda-Urundi (Institut Agronomique du Ruanda-Urundi), becoming the nation’s first significant center of higher learning. Following Burundi’s independence in 1962, three further specialized institutes sprouted up in Bujumbura at the urging of the Jesuit missions. In January 1964, these colleges combined to create the Official University of Bujumbura (often known as UOB). The UOB amalgamated with two technical schools to form the University of Burundi, often known as the Université du Burundi (UB), in 1977.
The University of Burundi Library was inaugurated in 1981 and formally dedicated in 1985. One of Burundi’s biggest libraries, it had 150,000 books in its collection according to a 1993 assessment.
Political unrest in other parts of Burundi has considerably affected university instruction since independence. Particular issues were brought on by the Burundian Civil War (1993–2006), as well as the socioeconomic crisis that followed, which resulted in strikes, financial issues, and a brain drain of academic staff members to other countries. Ethnic Tutsi massacred ethnic Hutu students at the university on June 11 and 12, 1995.
Pierre Nkurunziza, the president of Burundi from 2005 to 2020, is among its former students. After completing his studies in physical education, he worked as an assistant lecturer at the university until being expelled as a Hutu in 1995. Before the 1995 riots, his successor Évariste Ndayishimiye was enrolled in the university’s law program, but he never finished it.
UB is a member of the Conseil Africain et Malagache pour l’enseignement supérieur, the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie, the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA), and the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Development in Agricultural (RUFORUM) (CAMES).
