About the University of Kinshasa

The Catholic University of Louvain founded a medical association to address health and education in the Congo in 1924, which marked the beginning of the University of Kinshasa’s history. As a result of this initiative, professors from this university founded the Medical Foundation of the University of Louvain in the Congo (FOMULAC), and later in 1927, the first healthcare facility was built in Kisantu, Bas-Congo, where the first nursing program in the Congo was held.

In the same location, the University of Louvain established agronomy in 1932. In 1936 and 1937, it added sections for administrative and commercial studies and medical assistants. These three divisions were combined in 1947 under the name “Centre Universitaire Congolais de Lovanium”, which was moved from the location of Kisantu to that of Kimwenza in 1952, and later became Lovanium University, the University of Kinshasa, on the present-day location of Mount Amba, with a 400-hectare area.

Candidates in the natural sciences, social and administrative sciences, educational sciences, and agricultural sciences began the first academic year of this new university in 1954. Finally, university clinics were established in 1957, initiating the first Ph.D. in medicine. The new institution has a nuclear reactor called TRIGA (Training, Research, Isotope Production Generated in Africa) installed in it in 1957 for the investigation of biological samples of creatures, plants, seeds, and chemical systems.

The new university was the most significant and well-known provider of higher education in Central Africa and all of sub-Saharan Africa from its inception due to its impressive infrastructure, superior programs, level and scope of research activities, as well as the caliber of its welcome. In this capacity, it had hosted notable speakers including Albert Einstein, Igor Prigogine, Haroun Tarzieff, Yves Cousteau, and Cheik Anta Diop, as well as Colonel Mengistu Hailé Mariam (future President of Ethiopia), Nzo Ekangaki of Cameroon (future Secretary General of the OAU), Mahmoud Riad of Egypt (future Secretary General of the Arab League).

When Lovanium University was nationalized in 1971, it became one of the campuses of the National University of Zaire (UNAZA). In 1981, it reclaimed some of its autonomy and changed its name to “University of Kinshasa”. This nationalization signaled the University of Kinshasa’s decline, which was characterized by a gradual loss of its historical significance, a gradual withdrawal of the State, which was no longer able to subsidize the University, and a deterioration in the working conditions of both students and faculty as well as administrative staff.

Agronomy, Law, Economics and Management, Literature and Human Sciences, Medicine, Pharmacy, Polytechnic, Sciences, Social, Administrative, and Political Sciences, and Psychology and Educational Sciences were among the ten faculties that had 23,250 students during the 2004–2005 academic year. 508 full professors, professors, and associate professors make up the academic and scientific body; 700 heads of work, assistants, and professionals who oversee professional practice make up the scientific body; and 2,800 agents make up the administrative, technical, and working personnel.
