About the University of Sierra Leone

The old unitary public university system in Sierra Leone was known as the University of Sierra Leone. It is the oldest university in Africa, having been founded in February of 1827.

The Fourah Bay College and Njala University College were separated from the University of Sierra Leone as of May 2005. Its roots can be found in the Fourah Bay College, which the Church Missionary Society founded as an Anglican missionary school with the help of Charles MacCarthy, the country’s president. The first person to enroll at Fouray Bay was a student named Samuel Ajayi Crowther. Soon, Krio and other Africans looking for higher education in British West Africa were drawn to Fourah Bay College.

These included many more, particularly in the theological and educational professions, as well as Nigerians, Ghanaians, and Ivorians. It was the first university in West Africa built with a Western design. Freetown was referred described as “the Athens of West Africa” under colonialism as a tribute to the college.
