About the University of South Africa

The largest university system in South Africa by enrollment is the University of South Africa (UNISA), also referred to as Unisa. One-third of all South African college students attend it. UNISA is one of the world’s mega universities and the only one in Africa with over 400,000 students throughout its numerous institutions and affiliations, including overseas students from 130 different nations.

As a complete university, Unisa provides academic and vocational programs, many of which have earned international accreditation. They also have a wide geographic reach, ensuring that their graduates are recognized and employable in many nations throughout the world. The university has a long list of renowned South Africans as alumni, including two Nobel laureates: Nelson Mandela, the country’s first democratically elected leader, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.

The University of South Africa, also known as Unisa, was originally established in 1873 as the University of the Cape of Good Hope. For the majority of its early history, Unisa served as both an Oxford and Cambridge university examination center and an educational cradle from which most other universities in South Africa descended.

The autonomous University of South Africa was established by law in 1916 as an “umbrella” or federal institution with its seat in Pretoria, acting as the academic trusteeship for several colleges that later evolved into autonomous universities (the same law established Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town as autonomous universities). Grey University College in Bloemfontein, Huguenot University College in Wellington, Natal University College in Pietermaritzburg, Rhodes University College in Grahamstown, Transvaal University College in Pretoria, the South African School of Mines and Technology in Johannesburg, Potchefstroom University College were among the colleges that fell under UNISA’s trusteeship.

The trusteeship of UNISA was extended to the five “black universities”—the University of Zululand, University of the Western Cape, University of the North, University of Durban-Westville, and University of Fort Hare—in 1959 with the enactment of the Extension of University Education Act. UNISA was given a new assignment in 1946 as a remote learning institution, and today it provides certificate, diploma, and degree programs up to the doctoral level.

In January 2004, Technikon Southern Africa (Technikon SA), a polytechnic, amalgamated with Unisa, incorporating Vista University’s online learning division (VUDEC).

The Times Higher Education named the University of South Africa the sixth-best university in South Africa in 2015. Out of 30, this places the institution as the sixth-best university in Africa.
