About the University of the Gambia

Sere Kunda, the largest city in the Gambia, is home to the University of the Gambia (UTG), a higher education facility. The campus was established in 1998 in Kotu-Kanifing, a Sere Kunda neighborhood. It wasn’t until March 1999 that the UTG began to provide courses as a result of a statute that the Gambia’s National Parliament had enacted. There were reportedly 300 students enrolled in 1999. There were 44 academic staff members as of 2002. There were over 2000 students registered in 2006. At Faraba Banta, a new campus has been planned by the Gambian government.

The university has begun two master’s degree programs in public health in conjunction with the University of Illinois at Springfield and the University of Iowa, according to an article from October 11, 2012. Vaccination News Daily reports: “The two programs, according to Rex Kuye, director of the public health division, were developed locally to meet the growing health issues in the Gambia.

Throughout the past 20 years, The Gambia has made significant advancements in public health. Since 2004, when the country was declared to be polio-free, there have been no confirmed cases. According to the Foroyaa Journal, the success in the fight against polio was due to strong governmental commitment and routine polio immunization coverage of more than 90% since 1990.”
