The university is termed after the first Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa. The motto of the university is “Doctrina Mater Artium”, which means “Education is the mother of the practical arts”.

About Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University

The university was recognized in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology, Bauchi. The institution’s first students were acknowledged in October 1981 for pre-degree and remedial programs while the degree courses of the School of Science and Science Education were instigated in October 1982. On 1 October 1984, the university was fused with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria with a change of name to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa College, Ahmadu Bello University, Bauchi campus. The university recuperated its independent status in 1988 following an overall demerger of such institutions. This was trailed by a change of name to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.

The academic pattern of the university was communicated in 1980 after consultation with subject specialists from Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America. The prospectus accepted was applied in nature, as suitable for a technologically founded institution, and this theme is preserved in all the units of the university.

Who founded ATBU?

Answer: The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, ATBU, Bauchi was recognized in 1980 as the Federal University of Technology (FUT), Bauchi, situated in the North Eastern part of Nigeria with Dr. Jerome Udoji and Professor A. O. Adekola as the pioneer Pro-Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor individually, while Alh. Adamu Aliyu was the first Registrar of the University.

Applicants must have at least 6 (six) “Cs (Credits)” grades in their O’level result (s). This must contain English Language, Mathematics, and three other subjects connected to their course of study. Candidates must score at least 180 in the JAMB UTME examination

Not more than ONE sitting result is acknowledged for admission into the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU).

ATBU admission necessities thru Direct Entry 

Applicants must own at least five (5) Credits in their O’level result. This must contain English Language and Mathematics. However, two sitting result is not allowed.

Does ATBU accept the second choice?                           

Answer: No. ATBU does not accept second-choice applicants for admission. The institution does not offer admission to applicants who select ATBU as their second choice institution.
