About African University College of Communications

The African University College of Communications is a private tertiary institution in Adabraka, Accra, Ghana, dedicated to the study and teaching of journalism, communication studies, business, and African Studies. It also offers opportunities for advanced learning and practical and professional training in support of Africa’s rapid economic development.

The University began accepting Diploma candidates for its Communication Studies program in 2002, and the National Accreditation Board (NAB) of Ghana legally recognized the university as a tertiary institution in 2004.

The Africa Institute of Journalism & Communications was the previous name of the African University College of Communications (AIJC). Kojo Yankah, a former editor of Ghana’s most widely read newspaper, the Daily Graphic, who also served for nine years as director of the Ghana School of Journalism, seven years as minister of state, and eight years as a member of parliament, founded the private postsecondary institution in 2002.

The National Accreditation Board once again gave the institute permission to offer Bachelor of Arts degree programs in 2007, and it later changed its name to the African University College of Communications (AUCC), becoming the first university in Africa to have journalism and communication studies as its two main academic specializations. NAB once more approved AUCC certification in 2010 so that it could continue to provide Business Administration courses for the Bachelor of Science degree. To award degrees, the School is associated with the University of Ghana, and to award diplomas, with the National Board for Technicians Exams (NABPTEX).

On the first floor of the main building on the AUCC campus, the Sam Quaicoe Library serves as the primary library for the African University College of Communications. The library has a remarkable collection of rare books, prints, and archives in addition to over 5,000 books, CDs, and tapes. The library is getting ready to make significant electronic materials available.

The hub of academic activity at the university is the library. The library serves as the foundation for all academic activities like teaching, research, and learning since there, all kinds of documents are arranged for convenient access for university students.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization has designated the AUCC as a center of excellence in media and communication studies (UNESCO).

A combined radio broadcast produced in March 2012 by Level 300 students from Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, and the African University College of Communications (AUCC), won the “Most Innovative Programming in College Radio” prize in New York, USA.
