About Augustine University, Ilara

The idea of creating a university was nurtured by the university’s founder, His Eminence, Anthony Cardinal Olubunmi Okogie, who until August 2012 served as the Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos and was since succeeded by Most Rev. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins. It is noteworthy that the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos has supported educational growth in its jurisdiction since 1973. As a result, numerous elementary and secondary schools were founded. The Archdiocese founded the first privately-owned college of education in Nigeria, St. Augustine’s College of Education, Akoka, Yaba, Lagos, to promote high-quality higher education. To this end, the decision to form Augustine University was made.

A choice motivated by the Proprietor’s conviction that higher education, as a major source of ideas and innovation, plays an important role in our contemporary world. The Federal Government of Nigeria authorized corporate groups and organizations to create private universities as long as they met the requirements in acknowledgment of both this fact and the need to increase access to higher education in the nation.

Due to this, the Visionary had to form a planning and execution group, which he did under the leadership of Professor Joseph O. Obemeata, a retired professor from the University of Ibadan. Members of the Committee were tasked with helping to “midwife” the creation of a top-notch institution of higher learning that would draw bright students from different backgrounds within Nigeria and outside and prepare them for all-around training and development.

The Ilara village is located in the center of the site, which is primarily made up of farmlands and was massed up by individuals and outlying settlements.
