About Federal University of Lafia

The Goodluck Jonathan administration founded the Federal University of Lafia, formerly known as Federal University, Lafia, in 2010 as one of nine new federal universities spread across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. Lafia is the capital of Nasarawa State.

New students that made up the first group of students trained by University Vice Chancellor Prof. Ekanem Ikpi Braide started classes at the university in September 2012. Currently, Major General Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, named Prof. Shehu Abdulrahman as the third vice chancellor of the Federal University in Lafia (RTD). After Prof. Muhammad Sanusi Liman’s tenure expires on February 11, 2021, the appointment becomes effective.

The university’s temporary location was shifted to Obi road outside of the Lafia metropolis from its original location along Jos road in the city of Lafia, where it was planned to start using the College of Agriculture’s facilities. On 206 hectares of property donated by the Nasarawa State Government along the Lafia-Markudi Road in Lafia, the institution started moving to its new permanent home in 2015. By 2018, all faculties except for two have successfully moved to the university’s permanent location, including the central administration. For internal use, the university has an intranet.

The university will be a top-tier institution of higher learning that draws bright, hardworking, and talented young people from different backgrounds in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, and elsewhere and trains them to become critical thinkers who are well-rounded in their field of study. The University will equip them with the knowledge they need to successfully compete with their peers both locally and internationally while enhancing Nigeria’s economy.

The former State Secretariat Complex, a gift from the Nasarawa State Government, served as the university’s launch pad for its academic operations. Before the start of academic activities, there were enough buildings and structures on the property to serve as offices and classrooms. Moreover, existing structures were refurbished, and new structures were added.

The university started relocating to its permanent location in 2015, which is on 206 hectares of land granted by the Nasarawa State Government in Lafia along the Lafia Markurdi Road. By 2018, all faculties had relocated to the university’s permanent location, except two. Federal University Lafia P.M.B. 146, Lafia Nasarawa State, Nigeria is the institution’s address.

The Governing Council changed the University’s name to the Federal University of Lafia on June 20, 2019. The 2015 Gazette of Federal University Lafia (Establishment) Act, which changed the university’s name, served as the foundation for the rectification.
