About Dire Dawa University

Ethiopia’s Dire Dawa is home to the public university known as Dire Dawa University. As one of 13 new universities established by the Ministry of Higher Education, Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, it began classes in the 2006–07 academic year with 754 students.

In 2006, Dire Dawa University was founded with 754 students enrolled in 13 different undergraduate academic programs across three faculties (Faculty of Natural Science and Mathematics, Faculty of Social Science and Language, and Faculty of Business and Economics), operating with minimal resources and 90 teachers. To establish new structures and workshops, Dire Dawa University and an affiliate campus of Haramaya University united in 2008.

In 2018, DDU established one Institute of Technology and five colleges, 33 different academic programs, including the College of Natural & Computational Science, the College of Business & Economics, the College of Social Sciences & Humanities, the College of Law, and the College of Medicine and Health Science. There are now 12,500 students enrolled in 39 academic programs, 7,971 of whom took evening, weekend, and summer classes through various programs.

One of the ten Ethiopian institutions in charge of the industry-led economic transition is the Dire Dawa Institute of Technology. Putting research and technology first, DDU implemented the government’s 70:30 rule (Engineering & Natural Science to Social Sciences). The university had 1,177 academic staff members as of 2018; 834 were on duty and 343 were enrolled in the full-time study to complete their second and third degrees.

72% of the academic staff members had a second degree or higher, compared to 28% of first-degree holders. Moreover, DDU has 1,143 permanent academic employees, compared to 28% contract-based employees and 58% technical employees for the academic year 2007–2018.
