About Kirinyaga University

Kirinyaga University (KyU) is around 115 kilometers north of Nairobi on the Sagana-Embu Highway. It is the successor to Kirinyaga Technical Institute, which was conceived by the people of Kirinyaga in 1971, when the former head of state, Hon. Daniel Arap Moi C.G.H., M.P. (then Vice-President), launched the Harambee Fund Raising Drive at the request of the Kirinyaga people. Kirinyaga County Council set aside 200 acres of land for the institute near Kutus, while another 50 acres were bought in the Kangaita area on Mt. Kenya’s slopes.

On March 2, 1977, the Institute welcomed its first 72 students, 48 of whom were accepted into the Department of Building and Construction and the remaining 24 into the Department of Clothing and textile technology. The early and mid-1980s saw the introduction of new training programs for electrical installation and plumbing, respectively.

By way of Legal Order No. 108 of August 2011, Kirinyaga University institution, the forerunner of KyU, was founded as a constituent institution of Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). In September 2012, KyUC welcomed its first student into two Bachelor’s degree programs. Since then, the university has experienced great growth in both its student and staff populations, as well as in its buildings, enabling it to offer 13-degree programs.

On October 7, 2016, the University received its charter from His Excellency Hon. Uhuru Kenyatta, President of the Republic of Kenya. Since then, the university has added more academic degree programs. The university is putting itself in a position to be a pioneer in providing programs designed to create employers, not employees, in the fields mentioned in Vision 2030.
