History of Rongo University

Rongo University (RU), formerly known as Rongo University College, was founded as Kitere Technical School, a center for craft apprenticeship training, in the early 1970s by members of the neighborhood.

The need for a public institution to handle the expanding demand for technical and vocational training in the larger Southern Nyanza region was felt in the early 1980s. Only one technical training facility, the Ramogi Institute of Advanced Technology (RIAT) in Kisumu, operated at this time. leaders from the South.

Leaders from the Southern Nyanza region formed the Union of South Nyanza Welfare Association (USNWA), which petitioned the then-President Daniel Arap Moi to make Kitere Technical a public institution and grant permission for the newly established institute to be named after him. Both demands were granted by President Moi, and the Moi Institute of Technology (MIT) was established in 1983.

A memorandum of agreement was signed in 2007 between Moi University and Moi Institute of Technology to offer diploma and undergraduate programs in business, human resource management, and education at MIT as a satellite campus. In January 2008, the Rongo Constituency Development Fund enrolled the first group of 100 students. The government upgraded Moi Institute of Technology to Rongo University College four years after the Memorandum of Understanding was signed, allowing it to function as a constituent college of Moi University. On June 22, 2012, MIT was formally transferred to the Council of Rongo University College.

H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta signed the charter transforming Rongo University College into a full-fledged public university on October 7, 2016, after it had been operating for four years as a constituent college of Moi University. The University is situated 2.5 kilometers off the Rongo-Migori Highway and 11 kilometers from Rongo Town. The University now has 458 staff members and slightly more than 6345 students who are enrolled in both government-sponsored and self-sponsored programs.
